Rules this calculator applies
- Minimum: ¥5,000 or more before tax, per shop, per day. That is ¥5,500 at 10% or ¥5,400 at 8%. Since Nov 2026, general goods and consumables count together, with no separate thresholds and no ¥500,000 consumables cap (JTA).
- Tax portion: 10/110 of a 10% price (≈9.09%) and 8/108 of an 8% price (≈7.41%). It is not 10% of what you paid.
- Whole-receipt rule: if any item from a purchase is consumed or missing at departure, that purchase is not eligible (JTA, Customs).
- Not calculated: gold/platinum bullion and coins, tax-exempt items, quantities you can't personally carry out (JTA).
