Forgot to Ask for Tax-Free at the Shop? What You Can (and Can't) Do
Short answer: the airport cannot fix it. The tax refund only works for purchases the shop processed as tax-free with your passport. The airport kiosk just confirms those (Customs, JTA).
Common mistakes: can you fix it?
| What happened | Can it be fixed? | What to do now |
|---|---|---|
| Didn't ask for tax-free at the shop | Not at the airport | The kiosk cannot add it. If you are still near the shop, you can ask the shop; the official pages don't cover this case. |
| Checked my suitcase before the kiosk | No | Checked baggage can't be retrieved once checked in (JTA FAQ). Keep tax-free items in your other bags for the kiosk. |
| Ate or used part of one receipt | No refund for that receipt | Don't use the kiosk for it. Tell a customs officer at the counter (JTA FAQ). |
| Lost or gave away one item from a receipt | No refund for that receipt | The check is per receipt. Other receipts still count (JTA FAQ). |
| Want to mail items home myself | Not allowed | Self-shipping ended March 31, 2025. Some shops ship overseas for you; ask them (JTA FAQ). |
| Flying domestic first, bags checked through | Avoid it | Do the check at your last airport in Japan. Carry the items, or collect your bag there before the kiosk (JTA FAQ, Kansai Airport). |
| Running late for the flight | Risky | Stopping a red-result check to catch your flight counts as no check. If you can't depart because you ran short of time for the procedure, neither the airline nor customs will compensate you (JTA). |
Before your next purchase: 3 steps
- Look for the tax-free sign and say "tax-free, please" before paying.
- Show your passport and register the refund method the shop explains.
- Keep the receipt or QR code. Leave Japan within 90 days.
We don't cover penalties or individual cases here. For your own situation, ask a customs counselor: customs.go.jp (JTA).
Quick answers
I forgot to ask for tax-free at the shop. Can I claim it at the airport?
No official airport fix exists. The airport check only confirms purchases the shop processed as tax-free with your passport. The kiosk cannot add a purchase the shop did not register (Customs, JTA).
I already checked my suitcase with the tax-free items. Can I get it back?
No. Checked baggage cannot be retrieved once it has been checked in (JTA FAQ).
I ate or used part of a tax-free purchase. What do I do?
Do not use the kiosk for it. Tell a customs officer at the counter. That whole receipt gets no refund (JTA FAQ).
Can I mail tax-free items home myself?
No. Mailing tax-free items yourself (the 'separate shipment' option) ended on March 31, 2025. Some shops ship overseas for you; ask the shop (JTA FAQ).
