Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), Kyoto: Before You Go
Short answer: open 9:00 to 17:00 every day, ¥500 for adults, no lockers, and the temple's Japanese FAQ asks you not to take photos or video for posting on social media. Bring cash, and leave your suitcase elsewhere.
The rule most visitors miss: photos
- The temple's Japanese FAQ allows personal snapshots with a small camera only.
- It declines photography meant to be shown to other people, SNS included, and commercial photography.
- It also bans group photos, video streaming and drones, and bans interviewing visitors on the grounds.
- The English FAQ is shorter and does not say this. If you plan to post, check the Japanese FAQ yourself (link in the sources); a browser translation is enough.
- The temple runs a live camera that updates every 3 minutes (official home page). It is also how the temple says to check snow.

Getting there (official)
- By city bus: get off at Kinkakuji-michi. The temple lists bus lines 12, 59, 205 and M1 for this stop.
- From Shokoku-ji: board at Karasuma Imadegawa or Doshisha-mae and take line 59 to Kinkakuji-michi.
- From Ginkaku-ji: board at Ginkakuji-michi and take line 204 to Kinkakuji-michi (the Japanese page; the English page leaves out the line number).
- By car: 250 spaces in total. Parking is open 8:40 to 17:10. Cars pay ¥400 for the first 60 minutes, then ¥200 per 30 minutes. Follow the attendant at the approach.
- The temple's pages give no route from Kyoto Station, no bus travel times and no fares, so none are shown here.
Good to know before you queue
- No luggage storage and no lockers at the temple. Use a station locker first; see coin lockers and luggage storage.
- No place to eat a boxed lunch in the garden.
- Pets: only small dogs and cats, fully inside a cage or carrier, not held in arms or a sling and not taken out for photos. Service dogs may go in as they are.
- Step-free up to the Golden Pavilion only. Past it the route has steps, so strollers and wheelchairs turn back at that point.
Left out (not confirmed on an official page today): how crowded it is at any hour, the best time to visit, how long a visit takes, the autumn colour dates, how long it takes to reach from Kyoto Station, and the 2027 prices. The temple's news list showed no closure notice when checked, but that is not a guarantee.
Quick answers
Can I post photos and videos of Kinkaku-ji on Instagram or TikTok?
The temple's Japanese FAQ says no. It allows only personal snapshots with a small camera, and it declines photography meant to be shown to others, SNS included, as well as commercial photography. Group photos, video streaming and drones are also banned. The English FAQ does not mention this, so read the Japanese FAQ link below if you plan to post.
What time does Kinkaku-ji open and close?
9:00 to 17:00, open all year round. The temple says hours may change for special exhibitions.
How much is the ticket?
¥500 for high school students and adults, ¥300 for elementary and junior high school students. There is no group discount. The fee may change for special exhibitions.
Do I need to reserve a ticket?
The temple's access, FAQ and news pages mention no reservation system, only buying admission at the entrance. They don't say how busy it gets, so no queue time is given here.
Can I pay by card?
Cash works. Since a notice dated September 28, 2026, the entrance also takes the cashless service Omairi Pay, which needs no app. It does not cover charms or goshuin (stamps). The pages checked do not list credit cards or IC cards, so carry cash.
Is there a coin locker or luggage storage?
No. The temple says it has no luggage storage and no lockers, and tells you to carry your bags or use a station locker. See our coin locker guide for options.
Can I bring a stroller or wheelchair?
Only part of the way. The path is step-free up to the Golden Pavilion. After it there are steps, and wheelchair and stroller users are asked to turn back and leave by the entrance. Wheelchairs can be borrowed at the temple without a reservation, if one is free.
Can I eat or have a picnic there?
The temple says the garden has no place to eat a boxed lunch.
