How Early Should You Get to the Airport for Japan's Tax Refund?
Free refund calculator — see your number in 10 seconds →The official advice is simply "arrive early": the customs step must be finished before you check in your bags, and a Red result means an inspection that takes extra time.
Why time matters
- The kiosk itself takes a few seconds from passport scan to result (JTA FAQ).
- Red result = show your tax-free goods to a customs officer at the inspection area (JTA).
- Customs confirmation, including any inspection, must be completed before your boarding check-in. If you stop the inspection midway (for example, to catch your flight), it does not count as confirmed (JTA).
- If you miss your departure because of the tax-free procedure, neither the airline nor customs compensates you (JTA).
- Bags already checked in cannot be pulled back for the tax-free step (JTA FAQ).
Plan it
- Go to the tax-free kiosk in the international departure lobby first, then bag drop.
- At Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu, Fukuoka, New Chitose and Naha, short-term visitors can also do it online with Visit Japan Web on the dedicated airport Wi-Fi, before security (JTA).
- Domestic connection? Do it at your last airport in Japan (JTA).
- Add a buffer on top of your airline's normal check-in advice if you have many receipts. Check your airport's own guidance.
