Japan Immigration Wait Times: What the Official Data Shows

Short answer: most visitors clear immigration within 20 minutes, but not all. In March 2026 about 73% of short-stay visitors nationwide did, and only 56% at Fukuoka. There is no official live wait time we could find. Fill in Visit Japan Web before landing and use the integrated kiosk if your airport has one.

Why this page: in the Japan Tourism Agency survey of 4,110 visitors leaving Japan (FY2025), trouble with entry procedures was reported by 10.3% of visitors, and the most common reason was a long wait or long procedure (58%).

By terminal, March 2026

Which terminal you land at depends on your airline; we did not check this.

The long waits

The agency also reports the share of short-stay visitors who waited 60 minutes or more on the month's busiest arrival day. For 27 March 2026 it was 0.29% nationwide: Narita 0.92% (Terminal 1 south hall 2.92%), Haneda 0.02%, Kansai 0.00%, Fukuoka 0.00%. For January 2026 it was 0.17%. So long waits happen, but to a small share of people on the busiest day of those months.

The agency's note for March 2026: new foreign arrivals were about 3.33 million, the highest ever for a March, so crowding is likely. It adds that when flights arrive late or early and bunch together, passengers concentrate and the checks take longer.

How the number is counted (official method)

Waiting time is the moment landing permission is given, minus the moment the aircraft reaches its stand, minus the walk to the immigration hall (and, for people who use a kiosk outside the hall, the time at that kiosk). The 20-minute figure is the share of short-stay visitors, such as tourists and short business trips, who got permission within 20 minutes of that.

What can shorten your time (Japan Customs)

  1. Complete Visit Japan Web and get the 2D code.
  2. At the Integrated KIOSK, scan the code and your IC passport. It takes your photo and checks it against the passport photo; foreign nationals also give fingerprints.
  3. Follow the letter (a, b, c, d) the kiosk shows, then complete immigration at a dedicated booth.
  4. If you don't need a customs inspection, you may pass the electronic gate by face recognition.

Japan Customs lists the kiosks at Narita Terminal 3, Haneda, Kansai and Fukuoka. Start dates and hours are on pages it links, which we did not check; ask your airline or the airport before relying on them.

Left out (not confirmed on an official page): live wait times, how long a connection you need after landing, and data for months after March 2026.

Quick answers

How long is the immigration queue in Japan?

The Immigration Services Agency publishes the share of short-stay visitors who got landing permission within 20 minutes. In March 2026 it was 73% across all airports, from 56% at Fukuoka to 86% at Kansai. That is a monthly statistic, not a live wait time and not a promise for your flight.

Which airport is slowest?

In March 2026 the lowest share cleared within 20 minutes among the seven airports in the table above was Fukuoka (56%), then Haneda and Narita (68% each). In January 2026 Fukuoka was 61%. Past months do not predict your arrival.

How many people wait more than an hour?

On the busiest arrival day of March 2026 (27 March), 0.29% of short-stay visitors nationwide waited 60 minutes or more: 0.92% at Narita, 0.02% at Haneda, 0.00% at Kansai and Fukuoka. In January 2026 the nationwide figure was 0.17%.

What is the Integrated KIOSK?

A machine that takes your passport data, face photo (and fingerprints for foreign nationals) and your customs declaration at once. You scan the 2D code from Visit Japan Web and your IC passport. Japan Customs lists Narita Terminal 3, Haneda, Kansai and Fukuoka.

Can everyone in my family use it?

Customs says every passenger, including family members, must complete the procedure one by one, and people under 135 cm are not eligible because of the equipment. The page does not say what children under 135 cm do instead.

Does the time at a kiosk count as waiting?

Not in the official count. The Immigration Services Agency says that since May 2025, time spent at kiosks set up outside the immigration hall is counted as travel time to the hall.
