Visit Japan Web: Arrival Guide

Short answer: register your immigration and customs details on Visit Japan Web before you fly, then show the 2D code on your phone at the airport. It is the Japanese government's own free service (Digital Agency); you can fill it in on a PC but need a phone or tablet at arrival.

Steps

  1. Open Visit Japan Web from the Digital Agency page (link below) and create an account.
  2. Register your passport, trip and arrival details.
  3. Fill in the immigration and customs sections. Since Jan 2024 both use one unified 2D code.
  4. Save or screenshot the code before you board, in case airport Wi-Fi is slow.
  5. At arrival, show the code at immigration and customs.

What trips people up

Left out (not confirmed on official pages today): queue times at each airport, and how long before departure to register.
