Why Is My Japan Tax Refund 9.09%, Not 10%?
Free refund calculator — see your number in 10 seconds →Short answer: Japanese price tags already include the 10% tax. The tax is 10/110 of the price you paid, which is about 9.09%. For 8% items (food and drinks, not alcohol) it is 8/108, about 7.41% (National Tax Agency).
The math
| You paid (tax incl.) | Price before tax | Tax inside | % of what you paid |
|---|---|---|---|
| ¥11,000 (10%) | ¥10,000 | ¥1,000 | 9.09% |
| ¥5,500 (10%) | ¥5,000 | ¥500 | 9.09% |
| ¥10,800 (8%) | ¥10,000 | ¥800 | 7.41% |
10% is the rate on the before-tax price. From Nov 1, 2026 you pay the full tax-inclusive price at the shop, and the tax amount comes back after the customs check at departure (Japan Tourism Agency).
Fees: what official sources say
- Japanese tax law sets no rules on how the refund is paid. Shops may pay it themselves or use a refund provider (National Tax Agency).
- Possible methods: bank transfer, credit card, app transfer, or cash at the departure airport. Each shop decides (Japan Tourism Agency FAQ).
- For refund details, the official page says to ask the shop (Japan Tourism Agency).
- Official pages do not list fee amounts. If a fee is taken, the shop or provider sets it. Ask at the counter before you pay.
The ¥5,000 minimum is counted before tax: ¥5,500 at 10%, ¥5,400 at 8% (Japan Tourism Agency).
Quick answers
Why is my Japan tax refund about 9.09%, not 10%?
Because Japanese prices include tax. A ¥1,100 price is ¥1,000 plus ¥100 tax, so the tax is 100/1,100 = 9.09% of what you paid. For 8% items it is 8/108 = 7.41%.
Is there a fee?
Japanese tax law sets no rules on how the refund is paid (National Tax Agency). Any fee and the final amount are up to the shop or its refund provider. Ask the shop.
Why did I get less than the calculator shows?
The calculator shows the tax inside your price. The actual payout is decided by the shop or its refund provider (National Tax Agency, Japan Tourism Agency).
