Is the JR Pass Worth It in 2026?

Short answer: only if the single JR tickets you will really buy within 7 days add up to more than JPY 50,000. Add up your long rides (mostly Shinkansen), compare, and decide. For a Tokyo-only stay it is usually not needed.

Official prices (online purchase)

DaysOrdinary (adult / child)Green (adult / child)
7JPY 50,000 / 25,000JPY 70,000 / 35,000
14JPY 80,000 / 40,000JPY 110,000 / 55,000
21JPY 100,000 / 50,000JPY 140,000 / 70,000

Bought through an overseas JR-designated agency it costs more: e.g. 7-day ordinary JPY 53,000. Source: JAPAN RAIL PASS official site.

2-minute check

  1. List each JR trip you will take inside the pass period (e.g. Tokyo → Kyoto, Kyoto → Hiroshima, back to Tokyo).
  2. Look up the normal fare for each on a JR company's official site or a station ticket machine.
  3. Add them up. More than the pass price → the pass saves money. Less → buy single tickets.
