Shinkansen Luggage Rules for Big Suitcases

Short answer: measure your suitcase — if length + width + height is 161–250 cm, book a "seat with an oversized baggage area" (no extra cost) on the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu or Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen. Without it you pay JPY 1,000 on board; over 250 cm cannot board.

Quick answers

Do I need to reserve space for my suitcase on the Shinkansen?

Only if its three sides add up to 161–250 cm, on the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen. Reserve a 'seat with an oversized baggage area'; it costs nothing extra.

What if I board with a big suitcase and no reservation?

JR Central charges a JPY 1,000 baggage fee and the conductor decides where it goes. If the train is full you may be asked to take another train.

Can I reserve the luggage seat with a JAPAN RAIL PASS?

Yes. Ask at a JR ticket office or use the JAPAN RAIL PASS reservation site.
