Japan Tax Refund: Registration Problems and Late Refunds (Nov 2026 Rules)
Free refund calculator — see your number in 10 seconds →Under the refund method the money comes from the shop or its refund service provider, not from the government. So most fixes start with the shop's receipt and the provider they named.
What the official sources say
- Where you register: the shop explains it when you buy. For details, ask the shop or the refund provider it introduces (JTA FAQ).
- When you are paid: basically after customs confirmation at your departure airport or seaport completes the sale; ask the shop for timing (JTA FAQ).
- How you are paid: examples are bank transfer, credit card, app transfer, or cash at the port after customs confirmation. It differs by shop (JTA FAQ; NTA).
- The law does not prescribe the specific refund procedure, and shops may use an approved provider (NTA).
If registration fails at the shop or online
- Keep the receipt and any refund QR code or reference the shop gave you. Take a photo.
- Try the other methods the provider offers (another card, bank, or app), if available.
- Ask the shop counter before you leave the store — they know which provider they use.
- Whatever happens with registration, still do the customs step at departure, before bag check-in, within 90 days. Without customs confirmation there is no refund at all.
If the refund is late
There is no single official deadline for payment. Contact the shop or its provider with your receipt and the date you departed. Travelers commonly report card refunds taking days to a few weeks (unofficial reports, not a guarantee).
