Translation Apps for Japan: Camera and Voice
Short answer: use a camera-translation app (Google Translate or Papago) for menus and signs, and a speech app such as VoiceTra (free, made by Japan's NICT) to talk with staff. Download Google Translate's Japanese pack before you fly so the camera works offline.
Why this page: in the Japan Tourism Agency survey of 4,110 visitors leaving Japan (FY2025), talking with staff was the No.2 problem (15.4%); restaurants were the top place it happened, and 68% coped by using an ICT tool such as a translation app.

Tips
- Choose the "from" and "to" languages before you point the camera (Google).
- Use the flash in dim restaurants; clear printed text works best (Google).
- VoiceTra requires iOS 16+ or Android 10+.
Not confirmed by an official source, so left out: translation accuracy rankings, DeepL and pocket translator devices, Papago offline mode.
