How Much Does a Day in Japan Cost? (2026, Official Numbers Only)
Short answer: the average visitor spent about ¥17,600 per night stayed on lodging, food, transport and activities in 2025 (Japan Tourism Agency survey, shopping left out, our division by the average 9.5 nights). Getting around Tokyo by subway costs ¥1,000 a day with a 24-hour ticket, and many famous temples and shrines charge nothing to walk in.

| Item | Per visitor, whole trip | Per night (÷ 9.5) |
|---|---|---|
| Lodging | ¥84,057 | about ¥8,850 |

The survey covers all visitors except cruise passengers, including business trips and family visits, and adds the Japan-side share of package tours. Visitors from the UK averaged ¥192,926 on lodging over 14.4 nights, so long-haul travelers tend to sit above the average. The per-night column is our arithmetic, not an official figure.
Holiday visitors only (sightseeing and leisure purpose, 2025)
Business travelers pull the all-visitor average down, so here is the same survey for leisure visitors (average 7.1 nights). Per night is our division.

| Australia | about ¥12,590 | about ¥6,550 | 13.2 |
Lodging is per person, not per room. The survey does not split hostels, business hotels and ryokan, so we don't give a price for each type.
