Step by step

  1. Keep every tax-free item with you (carry-on or open suitcase). Missing one item = no refund for that whole receipt (Japan Tourism Agency).
  2. Kiosk first (3F, before security). Scan your passport. Green = done. Red = go to the customs inspection area and show the items (Haneda / JTA).
  3. Or use Visit Japan Web on the dedicated customs Wi-Fi in the departure lobby, before security (Temporary Visitor status only; JTA).
  4. Then check in your bags. A bag already checked in cannot be taken back for the tax-free procedure (JTA FAQ).
  5. After security: if your shop uses Self Tax Refund, get cash (yen) at its machine. Otherwise the refund goes by card, app or bank as your shop explained (JTA FAQ).

Arrive early. If you can't depart because you ran out of time for the tax-free procedure, neither the airline nor customs will compensate you (Japan Tourism Agency).
