Step by step

  1. Keep all tax-free items and your passport with you.
  2. Customs confirmation first: tax refund kiosk, or Visit Japan Web on the customs Wi-Fi (T1 4F, T2 3F, T3 2F, before security only) (Narita official).
  3. Green = done. Red = show the items at the customs inspection area (JTA).
  4. Then check in bags. After bag check-in you can't get the refund, and you can't take the bag back (Narita official).
  5. Refund: cash at a cash refund kiosk (you don't need to show the items again), or card / QR payment / bank transfer online as your shop explained (Narita official).
Customs confirmation is not possible after departure procedures, even with Visit Japan Web. Finish it before security (Narita official).

not officially confirmed: whether the kiosk itself works outside 05:30–23:00 (the official page lists only these hours), and exact position relative to each airline's check-in row. See the official Customs map.
